Recommended LinkedIn Learning for the Financial Crime Professional

Ian Messenger

LinkedIn Learning is a great resource of short (and longer) training sessions covering a wide range of topics - and not just related to Financial Crime. The website has a powerful search option and you will find a large number of learning options for each term you search.

I have included links below some of the LinkedIn Learning courses that came to my attention and are related to some of the key competences of a Financial Crime Professional;

  • Critical Thinking

  • Decision Making

  • Leadership

  • Presentations

  • Report Writing

Critical Thinking

This session emphasises the importance of understanding the problem at hand as well as who the audience is. Poses “the question behind the question”.

This session addresses deceiving fallacies, misleading cognitive biases, helps craft better arguments, hone judgment, and improving decision-making.

This short learning discusses the range questions that can be asked to obtain information and also to generate discussion.

Decision Making

This session explores the various approaches, styles, and best practices relating to decision making.

This short session discusses ways to confront our hardwired cognitive biases, in order to make good decisions and exercise more balanced, sound judgment.

In this longer session  learn techniques for identifying the root cause of a problem, generating options, and selecting the best solution.

Leadership

This session discusses some of the critical competencies of Leadership and the role of Inclusion in the workplace.

This learning explores the role of Mindset in the impact on your leadership style and leadership of others.

A strong introduction to the essential leadership skills of Coaching and personnel development.

Presentations

This session deals with mitigating some of the mental and physical anxieties you might encounter when giving a presentation.

This session draws upon the world of theatre to improve your presentation skills.

This session covers how to give dynamic and inspiring presentations in order to keep the audience engaged. This learning also demonstrates the importance of knowing your audience.

Report Writing

This short session discusses the need to anticipate any questions (or follow-up questions) a reader may have. The learning also covers the merits of avoiding jargon and abbreviations.

This session discusses the value of paragraphing, sections and headings in writing and the challenges of the English language. It also covers the many ways in which a reader approaches a document and how to best structure/prepare your writing to benefit the reader.

This session emphasises the need to write your report with the audience in mind and ensure that the report is tailored to that audience. It also discusses the importance of structure, outlining and tone.

This longer offering covers, in great detail, the editing of Content, Structure, Style, and Presentation. I found the Content section particularly relevant to financial crime professionals as it addresses clarity and relevance of articulation as well as the potential for inconsistancies.
